A tragic incident was reported near the circulating area of Kantabanji Railway Station earlier today, where a wall collapsed during debris clearance work being carried out by a private contractor using a JCB machine. The collapse resulted in the untimely demise of a contract labourer, Umesh Rishidev, aged about 56 years.
Prompt rescue operations were carried out and an inquiry has been initiated to determine the cause of the incident. Preventive measures are being reinforced to ensure such incidents do not recur in the future.
The contractor responsible for the work has been directed to provide necessary ex-gratia and financial support to the next of kin of the deceased, in line with contractual obligations and welfare provisions.
