The Israeli Embassy in India responded to the Maldives’ decision to ban Israeli passport holders from entering the country by recommending alternative destinations for Israeli tourists. In a post on social media, the embassy listed several beautiful Indian beaches where Israelis are warmly welcomed and treated with utmost hospitality. These included the beaches of Lakshwadeep, Goa, Andaman and Nicobar islands, and Kerala.
The Israeli consul general in Mumbai, Kobbi Shoshani, also expressed gratitude for the Maldives’ decision, highlighting the opportunity for Israelis to explore the stunning beaches of Lakshadweep. This response follows a previous post by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in which he praised the natural beauty of Lakshadweep.
The ban on Israeli passport holders entering the Maldives was announced by Maldives Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, Ali Ihsaan, during a news conference at the President’s Office. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, following a recommendation from the Cabinet, implemented the ban and established a Cabinet subcommittee to oversee its enforcement. The decision also involved amending necessary laws to prevent Israeli passport holders from entering the Maldives.
As a result of the ban, Israel’s foreign ministry advised Israeli citizens against traveling to the Maldives, including those with dual citizenship. They recommended that Israelis already in the country consider leaving, as it would be challenging for the Israeli government to provide assistance in case of any distress.
In response to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu announced plans to appoint a special envoy to assess the needs of Palestinians. He also intends to launch a fundraising campaign in collaboration with the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees to support the people of Palestine.
According to data from the Maldives government, the number of Israeli visitors to the country has significantly decreased this year compared to the same period in 2023. In the first four months of 2024, only 528 Israelis visited the Maldives, compared to 4,644 visitors during the same time frame the previous year.
The decision to ban Israeli passport holders from the Maldives comes amidst the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. The conflict was sparked by Hamas launching an attack on Israel, with terrorists infiltrating Israeli territory, attacking civilian communities, and taking hostages. In response, Israel has vowed to eradicate Hamas.
Overall, the Israeli Embassy in India has responded to the travel ban by promoting alternative destinations in India for Israeli tourists, while the Maldives government is taking steps to support Palestinians and prevent Israeli passport holders from entering the country. The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas continues to impact diplomatic relations and travel arrangements.
