In a troubling development, just days after the attack on an Indian Army Major in Odisha, another high-ranking officer and his family were subjected to harassment. A Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the Indian Coast Guard, stationed in Paradip, was reportedly misbehaved with by a group of youths during a visit to a tourist spot in Odisha. The incident occurred while the officer was on a family outing, raising concerns about the growing disrespect towards uniformed personnel.

According to sources, the DIG, whose name has not been disclosed, was enjoying time with his family at a popular destination in the state. A group of local youths approached the officer and his family and allegedly began misbehaving. Despite the DIG’s attempt to defuse the situation, the youths continued to hurl verbal abuses and reportedly threatened them. The situation escalated, but the officer managed to maintain composure, protecting his family from further confrontation.

Authorities have taken swift action following the incident. A formal complaint was lodged by the DIG, leading to the identification and detention of the accused individuals. Local police confirmed that an investigation is underway, with charges likely to be filed under sections related to public misconduct, harassment, and endangering public safety.

This incident closely follows the recent attack on an Indian Army Major in Odisha, where the officer was assaulted by a mob after an argument over a road incident. Both events have sparked widespread outrage, particularly within the defence community. Military personnel and veterans have expressed concern over the apparent rise in disrespect and hostility toward the armed forces in civilian spaces.

The Coast Guard DIG, speaking briefly to the media, urged the public to remember the sacrifices made by defence personnel. “As members of the armed forces, we serve the nation with pride and respect. It is unfortunate that such incidents are occurring. We expect the same respect in return,” he said.

Odisha’s government has also issued a statement condemning the incident. “We have zero tolerance for such behaviour, and strict action will be taken against those responsible. Our armed forces are a source of pride for the nation, and their dignity must be upheld at all times,” said a spokesperson from the Chief Minister’s Office.

This wave of incidents involving harassment of military officers has raised serious concerns about the public’s perception of the armed forces and their role in society. The defence fraternity is now calling for stricter laws and better public awareness to prevent further such occurrences.

Both the Indian Army and Coast Guard have reiterated their commitment to serving the nation, but the recent incidents highlight a disturbing trend that, if not addressed, could undermine the respect traditionally afforded to uniformed personnel.

As investigations proceed, it remains to be seen how these events will shape discussions around the safety and respect of defense officers in civilian spaces. Meanwhile, security for both military officers and their families is expected to be tightened in light of these unfortunate events.
