Karnataka lawmaker Prajwal Revanna, who fled to Germany last month following allegations of horrific sex crimes, has released a statement apologizing to his parents and expressing his intention to return to India. In his statement, Revanna claimed that comments and “political drama” by opposition leaders, including Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, drove him into depression and isolation. He assured that he would cooperate with the special investigative team (SIT) set up by the state government and appear before them on May 31, 2024.

Revanna, a Janata Dal (Secular) leader and the grandson of party patriarch and former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda, is also the sitting MP from Karnataka’s Hassan Lok Sabha seat. He has been nominated to defend his seat in the upcoming 2024 general election. The Janata Dal (Secular) is allied with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Revanna’s statement comes after a warning from his grandfather, HD Deve Gowda, who urged him to return home and surrender or face the anger of the family. Deve Gowda emphasized that if Revanna is found guilty, he should face the harshest punishment under the law. Revanna’s uncle, HD Kumaraswamy, the former Chief Minister of Karnataka, also appealed to him to cooperate with the investigation and prove his innocence if he has not done anything wrong.

However, Revanna’s return to India may be complicated by the fact that the Ministry of External Affairs is set to cancel his diplomatic passport. The state government has made a request to cancel his passport, and the process is underway. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has mentioned that the request to cancel the passport was made on May 21, several days after the scandal broke. This development has led to political exchanges between the Congress and the BJP, with each party criticizing the other over the Revanna case.
